Some in-studio pics

Hey all! Hope everyone is good. Quick update on the happenings here in MCR land.

We’re almost done tracking the record, and then moving on to mixing. This process has been really different and enlightening. When we went to Tokyo for the Summersonic shows, we came back recharged and remotivated, wanting to better what we had done before we left. What resulted was us writing some of our best songs on the record. Lesson learned? Sometimes you have to step back to get to the real heart of things…

Photo-shoot today, and damn’t none of my old clothes fit! Either time to go shopping, or time to hit a gym. Neither are choices I like…

Mine and Christa’s dog Bauer, who I posted a picture of a few weeks ago, has been diagnosed with CRF – chronic renal failure – which is insane for a dog his age. He’s three, and very sick. Unfortunately, its something that you wouldn’t pick up on until its too late. We decided to bring him back home to Jersey where he can run in the grass and play, and luckily that seems to be making him feel better. The doctors out here are surprised at how well he looks considering the severity of his condition. He’s a tough little guy.

Putting some pictures up from in studio. Enjoy!

Tracking continues…

After a few days of tracking guitars and bass, G has moved on to vocals for a few songs. Everything is turning out great. Me, Frank, Tom the engineer, and Peter and Kevin, the assistants, spent a few late nights getting great tones and having a lot of fun playing.

While G is doing vocals, me and Mikey are watching Frank play Fallout 3. He somehow ended up completely by accident creating a character who looks exactly like the guy who played Truman Capote in the movie that WASN’T “Capote.” I’ve attached a picture of him…

I think Frank is about to smash some guy’s head in with a tire iron…

Ray relives his childhood at 32

Went to see The Goonies tonight with Mikey & Frank. There’s nothing like reliving your childhood when you’re 32 years old. Last week, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and now this. What’s even better is rediscovering the movie, and realizing how batshit insane some of the scenes in this movie really are.

In a PG movie, Mouth tells his Spanish maid that the top drawer is where we hide the marijuana, the middle is where the coke and speed are, and always, ALWAYS seperate the drugs. There’s been 10 “shits” spoken by minors, a drug-dealing mafia, and a knife held to a 13 year old’s throat.
And that’s just in the first hour. Raiders had some similar scenes, none better than when God’s fury is unleashed from the Ark, collapsing bones, melting faces, and exploding heads.

There’s also a sense when watching this that every actor in this movie just gave it. They’re not really acting, they’re just being kids. Shit talking and razzing each other, but always there when you need them. Goonies Never Say Die!

Another thing to keep an eye on is how natural everything feels, and I think that’s due to extended takes. Notice that when there are edits in most scenes, its cutting back to the same take, so everything flows really well. The editing and direction here are very tight. Also every stunt is real. No CG, and it shows. Today, the water slide scene would have been a travesty of poor looking CG. Back then, what did they do? Threw the kids down the slide because it looked fun as hell!

Finally, a kick ass theme song. Yes Cyndi Lauper, the Goonies ARE good enough for me…

Good times tonight, good times. When do we watch Jaws?
